Director's Message

The Neighborhoods of Greater Lauraville, Inc. is what is called an 'umbrella group.' It is a community-based organization that serves a network of smaller communities. It is based on the principle that local voices are stronger and more effective when combined to address neighborhoods and commercial revitalization efforts. This issue focuses on how the opposite is equally as true - that the umbrella organization is only as effective as its member neighborhoods.

This edition is dedicated to everyone who worked to get the Cameo Bar and Lounge closed. It is an example of what we are at our best. The larger umbrella in the area, HARBEL, coordinated efforts with State and City officials and agencies, Moravia-Walther worked with Greater Lauraville staff to organize residents in the immediate vicinity of the bar, and Lauraville offered advice on strategy and referred its lawyer to help the effort. Once the newsletter went out announcing the Liquor Board hearing several local residents took to the phones of their own initiative and helped recruit their neighbors to attend the hearing. We should only accomplish such a task collectively, and we did. Congratulations!

The remainder of the newsletter is written by your friends and neighbors. If you would like to contribute an article to the Greater Lauraville Gazette, please send it to lorrie@greaterlauraville.com . I'd love to work with you on the next issue.

Are You a Member of YOUR Neighborhood Association?

If you get the NOGLI emails, you are most likely a resident of Northeast Baltimore. Many people are not aware of the distinction and relationship between NOGLI and the various individual neighborhood associations. So, for your information, here's the story:

NOGLI "is a community development corporation dedicated to improving the quality of life in Baltimore City..." Each neighborhood association's mission and scope of activities is defined by its members, but usually includes fostering a spirit of community, organizing community events such as blood drives, yard sales, dumpster days, fairs, etc., beautification, safety plans and improving property values.

NOGLI allocates funds for a salaried director's position. Neighborhood organizations are all volunteer run groups. NOGLI is guided by a board made up of representatives from each neighborhood association. Neighborhood associations are run by their individual members through a democratic process.

Individuals who want to become involved with NOGLI need to be members of their respective neighborhood association and then be nominated to serve as that association's representative on the NOGLI board or as a representative on NOGLI's Community Review Panel.

Any resident (usually both renters and home-owners are eligible) can be a member of their neighborhood association. Becoming active in your neighborhood associaion is the best way for you to strengthen not only your own neighborhood but NOGLI and Baltimore City as a whole. For just a small annual contribution, you can enjoy full voting privileges and even hold office.

You can find a list of community organizations on the NOGLI website. Join yours today and help make NOGLI-land the BEST place to live in Baltimore!
