The Lauraville Business District Gets 'Buy Local' Designation

buy local Maybe you've seen the signs in the Red Canoe or Chameleon Café--Greater Lauraville and the Lauraville Business District have achieved 'Buy Local' designation through the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance!

Buy Local (www.buylocal baltimore.org) is a grassroots campaign of the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance (www.csballiance.org ) designed to educate Baltimore area residents to Think Local when they are considering where to make purchases, to Buy Local whenever possible and to Be Local by supporting businesses that keep our community unique. We want to increase market share to independent, locally owned businesses by increasing awareness about the personal and community benefits of choosing local.

Through the designation, the Lauraville Business District joins other commercial districts in Baltimore such as Hampden, Fells Point and Federal Hill in promoting local retail to shoppers in the Greater Baltimore area. Buy Local will launch its annual Holiday shopping campaign in November by publishing a directory of its members. The directory will have three categories: business district (geographic), business type, and alphabetical. It will include maps of the districts, and a member card good for promotional items at participating stores.

Current Greater Lauraville Buy Local members include:
The Buy Local campaign is intended to be a multi-year campaign, which began in November 2004 with an initial focus on restaurants, retail and service businesses.

The objectives of the campaign are to:
  • Re-circulate more dollars in our community to promote a strong local economy
  • Support and strengthen locally owned, independent businesses and local jobs
  • Preserve and enhance our unique neighborhoods

Warm thanks are extended to Phil Kiracofe, the Program Director for Buy Local at CSBA, who helped design the outreach program to local merchants. Have questions, feel free to e-mail Phil at phil@csballiance. org.

Update: The Harford Road Corridor Study

A corridor study for Harford Road was begun in May and is continuing through September. So what is a corridor study? It is an assessment of the existing conditions and improvement needs for a commercial corridor. Such a study can be used to help build consensus among stakeholders in support of potential corridor improvements and can save time and money in the later planning, design, and construction of upgrades to the corridor. The study will hopefully serve as the foundation for a more comprehensive, community- driven Corridor Plan for Harford Road in the future.

The Harford Road Corridor study will focus on commercial revitalization needs, particularly with regard to land use, zoning and economic development opportunities. The role that Harford Road plays in the health of the larger community is also an important factor. A community planning survey is being conducted and in September there will be an opportunity to participate in a visual preference survey as part of this process.

Your participation and input is key-- it is after all your community. If you have not yet participated in the survey, it can be found at www.baltimorecity.gov/government/plann ing/index.html. There is still time to get it in. If you have any questions about the study and future planning for Harford Road, please don't hesitate to contact Jill Lemke, Northeast District Planner at 410- 396-5933 or jill.lemke@baltimorecity.gov.
