Obesity Continues To Be The Main Challenge

Before the director of the Faculty of Medicine of the Unam, Germán Fajardo Dolci, the head of the Education, Research and Health Policy Unit of the IMSS and the head of the Family Medicine Division of the Faculty of Medicine said that although the growth of obesity and overweight has slowed, it continues being the main health challenge facing the country.
“This problem has registered an increase in rural areas, where 75% of women are overweight or obese, which means that, of every four women, three have this condition.”
He reiterated that obesity triggers a myriad of ailments such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure and cancer, which are among the leading causes of death.
In the last 35 years, the mortality rate due to diabetes doubled four times, representing a growth of 300%.
In presenting some of the advances in health during this administration, she highlighted the reduction of maternal death, the decrease in HIV cases due to mother and child transmission, and the reduction of teenage pregnancies.
